Ubbink team works together in Highland Mist
Ubbink team works together in Highland MistThe annual Ubbink regional managers’ team building exercise took place on the weekend of 8 April 2005. Thanks to the success of past events held in Scotland, the team of 20 headed back to the remote West Highland Way for a 14 mile hike. This year, however, the skies were dark and menacing – wellies and waterproofs were definitely needed. But a little bit of bad weather wasn’t going to hamper events – especially for a team which set out to demonstrate that working together in harsh conditions also pays off in the office.

At 9.15 am the intrepid walkers set off from Drymen for their destination at Rowardennan. They were set several tasks to perform along the way, testing everything from their brand knowledge to their ability to multi-task and scavenge. The challenge of building a planned Lego model whilst walking appeared to be the most enjoyable.

Eventually however, the hike and the weather took their toll and claimed a couple of victims, who nonetheless stayed to cheer the others on to the final hurdle.

Seven hours after they began, the remaining members of the team started to come in thick and fast; the prospect of a warm hotel, a swift drink and a team dinner of haggis spurring them on to the finish. A perfect way to round off a thoroughly entertaining day.

Peter Montgomery, who organised the event, says,
“the exercise was a complete success and I am extremely happy with the performance of the team. I think everyone achieved a great amount and also enjoyed themselves, despite the weather and the challenging tasks.”

Ubbink parent company introduces Ubbink Econergy Solar GmbH
There has never been a better time to think about investing in one of Ubbink UK Ltd’s easy, affordable and reliable photovoltaic panels, the Solosun and Duosun, which provide any house with a source of sustainable energy. And the Ubbink parent company, Centrotec Sustainable AG, have made it even easier to install larger p.v. systems.

After a busy 2004, Centrotec Sustainable AG recently announced it has bought the roof integration products for solar energy systems business from Econcern, who will continue to focus on its core business. The newly created company, Ubbink Econergy Solar GmbH, based in Cologne, was established in December 2004.

Ubbink Econergy Solar GmbH will now sell the support structures for photovoltaic solar systems to a large European sales and distribution network. This means it will provide a perfect back-up service to that which Ubbink UK Ltd already provides. John Donovan, Ubbink UK managing director says,
“this is a great opportunity for Ubbink to really advance its position in the market. It makes sense that the group supplies the solar integration products and also the support structures, ConSole and InterSole, too”.

The ConSole is designed for quick, easy and professional mounting of all common solar panels on flat roofs. It is also light, which means safe and effortless transportation. The InterSole is the ideal system for fixing all types of solar panels on sloping roofs. Mounted with overlapping plastic sheets and special anchors, the solar panels are well equipped to weather storms. The systems make it possible to assemble the solar modules without drilling through the delicate roofing skin; making the application benefits especially important if the system is not going to be permanent, in countries such as Germany, where industrial roofs have just been hired in order to operate solar energy systems on them. Both support products are made from 100 per cent chlorine-free, maintenance-free, recycled, highly durable plastic.

Ubbink work to make Listed Building liveable
Rock CottageWhen Rock Cottage, a Listed Grade II house in the South East was bought by new owners, it was known to be in a poor state of repair and in need of modernisation. There was extensive work to be done and as the new owners were going to be living in it, they were going to need help from products which suited the aesthetic requirements of the house.

For the renovation work, the chartered surveyors specified Ubbink (UK) Ltd to handle a major part of the job – to provide improved indoor air quality with continuous controlled ventilation at minimal running costs. Ubbink’s central mechanically assisted ventilation system (MAV) was used to provide subtle extract ventilation from kitchens and bathrooms with only a discreet roof mounted fan to minimise unsightly outlets and an important factor was in its quiet operation. Extra ducts can now be vented through that single roof terminal making the system wholly practical for such a job. John Donovan, managing director Ubbink, says
“the MAV system is perfect for this kind of work, especially as it has the added benefits of being energy efficient and environmentally friendly at minimal running costs.”

Rock Cottage dates from the latter part of the 16th Century. Colin Fuller FRICS, Partner at Walrond Fuller Ltd, the chartered surveyors looking after the project says,
“it is a ‘transitional’ house, which means that it lies somewhere, in historical terms, between the smoke-filled open halls of the medieval period and the more fully developed ‘modern’ houses of late Elizabethan and Jacobean periods.” The owners wanted to ensure the work carried out was going to achieve an overall alteration which, although promoted modern living conditions, did not change the appearance of the house. Most importantly of course for such a building, were Listed Building consents.

Ubbink products were chosen not only because they were ideally suited for all applications and designs, performance and ease of installation but also because of the first class support provided by Ubbink’s technical representatives. Fuller comments,
“the Ubbink representatives visited the site many times during the installation to work with the main contractors whilst the ductwork was being fitted and then finally commissioned the system. They were always on hand to help with any difficulties.”

Ubbink and Celuform – a winning alliance
OFVSSince 1999, Ubbink (UK) Ltd, a leading UK supplier of roofing and building products, and Celuform, the UK’s first manufacturer of PVC-ue building materials, have together been providing a service that is second to none.

The alliance sees the supply of specific solutions to meet the customers’ needs. For Celuform, it means it is now able to offer alternative eaves ventilation systems; its own through-the-soffit and Ubbink’s over-the-fascia. Ged Ferris, Celuform marketing manager comments, “Ubbink is a great name and an outstanding company to work with. It cares about its customers and tries to meet all required needs, keeping costs low at the same time.”

Ubbink’s managing director, John Donovan, feels the alliance “works extremely well for Ubbink. It provides a way to showcase Ubbink products in sectors where they would not necessarily be exposed. The agreement has been in place for five years now and I can envisage it only getting stronger in the future.” Needless to say, the companies involved have every faith in each other, and, that together, they provide a winning team.

Indeed, it seems that this particular alliance benefits everyone involved, but it goes without saying that the real winners are the customers.

Diverse North Light for new 3-D art block
Chipping Sodbury school in BristolUbbink’s innovative Isolight North Lights have been installed at a new 3D art block at the Chipping Sodbury school in Bristol.

The new art block was part of a £300,000 building extension to enhance the art facilities. The work was undertaken in the summer holidays to minimise inconvenience, but this created a tight deadline and made ease of installation and material availability crucial.

Three triple skin, clear, polycarbonate continuous Isolight rooflights, measuring 8.3m by 2.1m, were specially designed to be installed at the new block and featured the innovative, electronically operated ventilation windows to optimise on air quality throughout the seasons.

Isolights are also environmentally-friendly as they eliminate the need for artificial light and utilise the latest UV protective polycarbonate glazing materials which provide impact damage resistance. Additionally the levels of insulation are in accordance with Part L of the Building Regulations.

Gerry Jackson, the contract administrator at the Property Services department, South Gloucestershire council, is very pleased with the results achieved. He comments: “the finished North Lights look extremely impressive and have lived up to my expectations as well as meeting all the requirements of the specification. We consider Ubbink to have played a key role in the building’s success.”

Ubbink introduces new slim, trim roof ventilation tile
UB60Ubbink (UK) Ltd introduced its new slim roof ventilation tile at Interbuild 2004. The UB60 Trimline HT is the latest in Ubbink’s range of hollow tiles which ventilate roof voids without disturbing the roof profile with unsightly surface inlets.

Air passes through the two layers of the tile to produce a 15,000mm  free vent area. The UB60, however, unlike the other hollow tiles in the Ubbink range, allows air flow through the top of tile as well as through the leading edge.

The UB60 Trimline HT tiles are made from PVC-U, designed for use in single lap, interlocking pitched roofs in new build or refurbishment projects and produced to match most common tile profiles.

Installation is straightforward as no batten cutting is required. Within the body of the UB60 Trimline HT is a vermin and insect inhibitor.

The UB60 Trimline HT’s are available in four standard colours: red, terracotta, sepia and anthracite but they can be coated to meet individual roof requirements.

Ubbink launches its Ultravent
UB61Ubbink (UK) Ltd launched the latest – and largest – of its Ubivent roof void ventilators at Interbuild 2004. The UB61 Ultravent provides 32,500mm 2 of free vent area, the largest in the Ubivent range.

Ultravent is the fifth model in the Ubivent range, which caters for most roof profiles in the UK including concrete or clay tiles and slates of any size.

The entire range offers specifiers a vast amount of choice, providing a ventilation solution for nearly any installation, without compromising on roofscape aesthetics.

All the vents are made from PVC-U and come in a standard colour range of terracotta, red, sepia and anthracite. Special colour finishes are available to order.

For added convenience matching units are available for the termination of building services including soil and mechanical and natural ventilation.

May/04 - Let it slide with Ubbink’s Celeste
Ubbink (UK) Ltd has launched a new Celeste rooflight range which opens with a sliding mechanism. All the high-quality Celeste ranges were specifically designed to maximise natural light in flat-roofed structures making them ideal for the majority of architectural demands - both new build and renovations.

The new maintenance-free sliding domes, as seen on the Ubbink stand at Interbuild 2004, are factory fitted to a 150mm GRP upstand and are particularly beneficial for ventilation and for those wanting a clear view of the sky; the larger units are ideal for access.

The full Celeste range includes square, rectangular and circular units with pyramids or domes in a full sequence of sizes. They are made from polycarbonate which has an exceptionally high level of transmission and spread of light. The domes are available in double or triple skin and, to ensure privacy, a diffused inner skin obscures vision with the minimum loss of light.

The outer dome lights are extremely tough and provide excellent protection against vandalism and sudden impact. For additional safety, Ubbink supplies tamper resistant fixings to deter unauthorised dismantling of the unit.
