Ubbink’s Jean Bebbington retires after thirty years
The end of November marks the retirement of Jean Bebbington from her post as product promotion manager for Ubbink (UK) Ltd. After nearly 30 years, Jean has seen many changes in the industry and advancements in technology which have made Ubbink the success it is today, something in which she takes personal pride.
Jean started on 6 October 1976 which coincided with the establishment of Ubbink (UK) Ltd, previously known as Ubbink Telmrose. She started her career as a personal assistant but quickly moved into a more product-focused role. Within a year of being with Ubbink she was made sales co-ordinator. Jean was responsible for all product brochures and ensured there were fully comprehensive product guides – a responsibility Jean continued to hold throughout her career.
In 1981, Jean’s remit changed again, this time to product promotion manager, which saw her pursue a role which combined marketing and technical support. Her personal choice to remain in this position was based on her enjoyment in fulfilling the responsibilities which came with it, including being the main contact for all advertisement enquiries. Through this activity Jean made many associations with different members of the media with whom she remained in contact during her entire career at Ubbink.
Jean’s primary objective throughout her career has always been to reinforce the message that Ubbink is one of the market leaders in its field. The culture and ethics of the company have been the main things that kept Jean at Ubbink for nearly three decades. She comments: “Ubbink has always been totally honest with customers and I could not have worked for a company for so many years that didn't have those values. I respect Ubbink and its working methods and this made my job easier and more enjoyable.”
One thing Jean has particularly enjoyed working on while at Ubbink was the exhibitions, especially Interbuild. She prided herself on having a well-designed and clearly presented stand, which stood out from the competition. Her success at the shows is so important to Ubbink that she will organise Ubbink’s stand at Interbuild 2004 even though she is meant to be enjoying her retirement.
Jean leaves a company that has grown immensely during her tenure and she is delighted with the role she played in helping Ubbink become what it is today.

Let it slide with Celeste
Ubbink’s Celeste is the high quality range of rooflights specifically designed to maximise natural light in flat-roofed structures. Already ideal for the majority of architectural demands, Celeste now opens with a sliding mechanism – making it suitable for both new build and renovations.
The maintenance-free sliding dome is factory fitted to a standard 150mm GRP upstand and is particularly beneficial for ventilation and the larger units are ideal for access. The full Celeste range includes square, rectangular and circular units with pyramids or domes in a full sequence of sizes. They are made from polycarbonate which has an exceptionally high level of transmission and spread of light. The domes are available in double or triple skin and, to ensure privacy, with a diffused inner skin – which obscures vision with the minimum loss of light. The outer dome lights are extremely tough and provide excellent protection against vandalism and sudden impact. For additional safety, Ubbink supply tamper resistant fixings to deter unauthorised dismantling of the unit.
Full information on the exclusive Celeste range is available in the brand new Celeste brochure, which is available in a hard-copy or pdf format, and features fixing guidelines and detailed facts on the other application options.

Celeste is the best for Christie Hospital
Taylor Young architects (Cheadle) masterminded the replacement of Christie Hospital’s mortuary with a new £2 million pound facility. They chose Ubbink’s Celeste rooflight as the best to meet the specifications and fit the aesthetic requirements.
The rooflight was built over a staircase. David Woodhead from Taylor Young comments; “We wanted to make sure that the octagonal rooflight achieved optimum natural light over the escape stairwell and was also an attractive design feature.”
Ubbink’s Celeste eight sided 45°angle pyramid made from double skin clear polycarbonate was ideal for the job. To meet specifications for Christie Hospital the exterior 1900mm aluminium frame was finished in blue RAL 5000. Durability was another key requirement and thanks to a weather resistant outer surface and UV protective coating, covered by a 10 year guarantee, the rooflight will look good for years to come.
Richard Shuker from Snape Roberts the project’s main contractor was impressed with the ease of installation: “It was important to have a rooflight that was quick and simple to install and Ubbink’s Celeste was perfect.”

Clean kitchen air with Ductex cooker and tumbler drier kits
Ubbink has introduced a range of Ductex ventilation kits for popular household appliances, completing its comprehensive range of domestic ventilation equipment.
The ventilation kits are now available for tumble driers and cooker hoods, and have been specifically designed to optimise air flow ensuring dirty air is extracted. They are easy to install and incredibly durable in such tough environments. The tumble drier kit utilises two different duct materials, enabling it to have the strength for wall cavity installation and the required flexibility of movement for easy cleaning. The first duct material is a bendable aluminium which provides the channel to bridge the wall cavity. It has a high crush strength and stays in place once installed. The second material is a PVC flexible hose, which connects the wall duct to the appliance and allows easy movement. The circular cooker hood kit is designed for cookers mounted to an outside wall and offers the most efficient, simple and cost-effective method of exhausting dirty air. Its fire resistant duct is made entirely of metal and is therefore ideal for installation over any hob. They are also supplied with an external self-closing grille to prevent energy-wasting back draughts when the hood is not in operation.A rectangular cooker hood kit is used when the hob and hood are not connected to an outside wall. It features extruded PVC sections, which are flame retardant for added safety, with moulded bends and connectors to provide a subtle method of ducting. The low profile duct is easy installed, especially along the tops of built-in kitchen cupboards to remain unobtrusive after installation.
All three Ductex ventilation kits are easy to install, durable and are supplied with all the fixings necessary including screws and plugs. For complete compatibility the kits are available in brown, white, grey or a terracotta finish suiting a variety of brick colours.

Isolight brightens pupils’ days
|
| Tendring Primary School is one of twelve schools to benefit from the PPP schools contract between Essex County Council and the Kier Group to carry out extensive maintenance and construction work.
A series of upgrades were carried out including the replacement of the faulty rooflight over the computer suite with a Ubbink Isolight. Speed and ease of installation helped the contractors carry out the refurbishment within a strict time frame minimising disruption to the school.
This continuous rooflight system was particularly appropriate for the project as it is manufactured to individual project requirements and can be supplied to any length, allowing the new rooflight to fit seamlessly in the existing opening. Isolight is made from double skin polycarbonate in powder coated aluminium frames and has UV protective polycarbonate glazing materials to provide impact damage resistance. The Isolight also features a convenient ventilation system.
The finished product demonstrates that Ubbink Isolight does not only enhance the natural light in the school building; it also creates a pleasant and environmentally sensitive atmosphere where pupils and staff can work in comfort. |

Heat
recovery and fresh air thanks to Ubbink
Ubbink
is launching Renovent (HR), its energy-efficient
ventilation system with heat recovery to ventilate
the whole house, minimise heat lost and ensure
a healthy environment.
Because
water vapour is created during showering, cooking,
washing, and even breathing, it affects many
homes. If untreated, it can lead to damp and
mould which in turn creates irreparable damage
to the structure of the buildings. More importantly,
however, it increases CO2 levels inducing an
unhealthy living environment.
This
innovative heat recovery ventilation system
extracts vapour and eliminates house odours,
produced while cooking, or unpleasant smells
from bathrooms and toilets. It also takes full
advantage of heat produced from lights, appliances,
inhabitants and the sun, by recovering 90 per
cent of the heat extracted from stale air and
transferring it to the fresh incoming air.
As the clean filtered air is warm enough for
the winter months but effective in reducing
the chance of mould growth and house dust mite
allergen, the ventilation saves energy, benefiting
the environment.
The
highly insulated HR unit features two Direct
Current (DC) fans which significantly reduce
running cost and extend the life expectancy
of the of the system. The unit also incorporates
separate filters for outgoing air – to
protect the heat exchanger – and for
the incoming air – to eliminate the introduction
of pollen and dust.
The
ventilation unit is easily installed in lofts,
cupboards or wall-hung in a utility room and
due to the constant velocity of the DC fans
it is not necessary to balance incoming and
outgoing air volumes. In addition, Ubbink offers
a full design service, external vents, room
valves and ducting to make the installation
process even easier.

Ubbink’s
rectangular ducting
The
design of modern kitchens is complicated by the
placement of cooker hoods. As these are rarely
sited on external walls, long, but more importantly,
discreet duct runs are required for ventilation.
Ubbink, however, provides the solution with its
Ductex rectangular duct which is ideal for these
applications.
The
duct is made from PVC, low profile extrusion and
injection moulded components. When combined, they
provide a versatile push fit system that can be
quickly and easily assembled for unobtrusive and
efficient domestic ventilation. The slim line configuration
is easily concealed above wall units or inside
cavities and ceiling voids ensuring the layout
and design of the kitchen is not disturbed.
The
rectangular duct features excellent air flow qualities
making it suitable for all extract ducting applications.
It is also available in two profiles: the 100 Series,
to suit 100 mm circular duct. is suitable for most
standard domestic applications while the 125 Series
is recommended for high air charge rates and longer
duct runs.
The
rectangular duct is produced from flame retarding
plastic which is hygienic and easy to clean

Al
fresco living in Cambridgeshire
An
al fresco lifestyle may seem incompatible with
the English weather, but not for the occupants
of a unique house in a Cambridgeshire village,
who opened up a new way of life by enclosing a
rear garden terrace. Ubbink’s Isolight offered
the key to this new approach to outside living.
Ubbink’s
Isolight rests on a specially designed frame. The
individual rooflight measures 4490mm x 7544mm and
therefore creates a feeling of space and light. The
Isolight is fitted with eight electronically opening
ventilation sections linked to rain sensors so one
can enjoy pleasant summer breezes in an area that
now links the house and garden. The roof’s
single skin, clear, polycarbonate panels and contrasting
powder coated red aluminium frame result in a modern
and stylish look. For maximum convenience, the roof
structure is mounted on a custom fabricated surround
and gutter system.
The
Isolight was the perfect solution for this al fresco
room. It is not only cost efficient but also has
the right appearance which compliments the rest of
the building and the landscape garden.

Ductex
SELV fans - safety first
Ubbink introduces its range of Ductex
SELV fans which offer completely safe ventilation
for bathrooms and shower rooms of any size.
For
maximum safety the fans feature a high performance
12-volt motor to allow installation within
1.25 metres of the shower or bath. As the Ductex
purpose built transformer reduces standard
mains voltage (220/240 volts) to a safe 12
volts for the fan supply, the SELV fans can
be fitted in any part of the room, even close
to the moisture source or within the spray
area.
SELV
fans are available in a wide range of models
with various extract rates and centrifugal
or axial operation for use in any toilet or
bathroom. Furthermore, the transformer can
incorporate a number of control options, from
a simple pull switch to a timer or humidistat
sensor.
All
SELV fans are compliant with the Building Regulations
for bathrooms and showers.

Ubbink
fans that make light work of ventilation
Ubbink
introduces its Ductex range of bath and shower
room extractor fan kits which offer ventilation
and lighting at the same time. For maximum
convenience and a streamlined look the ceiling
extractor fan kit incorporates an in-line
fan and a low profile grille with integral
light.
The
230-volt fan and transformer are safely tucked
away from water and splashing in the loft
or ceiling void allowing the extract grille
to be fitted directly above the moisture
source.
The
grille is fitted with a 12-volt halogen bulb
to provide bright light, in complete safety,
directly above the bath or shower. Furthermore,
the 50 watt lamp uses considerably less energy
than conventional tungsten bulbs allowing
users to save both power and money.
The
fans are available in two models: the standard
model is controlled by a separate pull switch
while the timer model comes complete with
adjustable timer to give a ‘run-on’ time
of 2 to 25 minutes after the room is vacated.
In
addition to their discreet look, the Ductex
ceiling extractor fan kits operate quietly
to achieve unobtrusive ventilation. All the
models meet the Building Regulations for
bathrooms and toilets.
